In this thread I will post the transfers (in/out) concerning Manchester United. This thread will briefly talk about the new and gone players for the 2009/10 campaign. Only official news when the club site posts the signing or presentation of the player.
The first official transfer for Manchester United is Antonio Valencia, from Ecuador. He is a 23-year-old winger who played for Wigan Athletic last season. He had 83 appearances for that club with only 7 goals. We can only pray Ferguson has the time to develop him into a world class player.
It is official: Cristiano Ronaldo is no longer a Manchester United player. ManUtd.com announced the sale to Real Madrid. Ferguson and the rest of the club wished him good luck:
“Cristiano has been a marvellous player for Manchester United. His six years at Old Trafford have seen him develop into the best footballer in the world. His contribution has been a major factor in the club’s success in that time and his talent, his ability to entertain and his infectious personality have enthralled fans the world over. Everyone here wishes him well in his future career.”
Michael Owen, the 29-year-old striker who played for Newcastle last season, has joined Manchester United since last Friday in a free transfer. Michael Owen is an English player who had a bright future a couple of World Cups ago. However, his injuries had prevented him to reach his highest potential. He has played for Liverpool, Real Madrid and Newcastle United. His club record is 322 games and 157 goals; he was also part of England National Football team with 89 games and 40 goals. Experts consider him a poacher, a player who is clinically effective in front of goal; he is a central striker very prone to injuries. He was Ballon d’Or in 2001, Cristiano is the reigning player.
Owen joins ManUtd in a 2 year deal and his wages are tied to his performance, as in games played and goals scored. It is understood that he will be a third choice striker, behind Rooney and Dimitar. He will join Macheda and Welbeck on the bench.
Owen comes in a free transfer as his contract with Newcastle expired in July 1. He said other clubs expressed interest in him but when Ferguson offered him the opportunity to show his craft, he immediately said yes.
Owen has to prove he is not doomed, that his career is not over and that he is not prone to injuries. Last season, he played 30 games and as third choice striker the injuries should be less. He has to show his potential at club level to prove to Capello, England’s coach, that he is good enough to play for the National Team in the World Cup.
Owen was part of Real Madrid in the last year of Florentino Pérez first presidential term. His injuries prevented him to succeed there. And that is what I fear Cristiano might face.
Today, Cristiano was presented as a Real Madrid player at the Bernabéu in front of more that 80,000 people gathered just to see him fulfilling his dream. He will wear jersey 9 with only “Ronaldo” on the back. Just like his name sake, Ronaldo Nazario. The presentation was a new record of attendance for a player presentation, breaking Maradona’s for Juventus record. He was pictured in his new uniform, had a little speech, juggled the ball a little and was pictured with the 9 European Cups. Later he was at a press conference, he was questioned about everything in Spanish, English and Portuguese. He answered in the language of the question. He says he will always be friends with Ferguson, he wants to face ManUtd in the Champions League final, he knows he has more responsibility now as the most expensive player, and he was glad to spend the last year in ManUtd.
The best thing of the Real Madrid official website is that they have a lot of media content, all free. I was able to watch the video, hear the presentation/press conference and lots of pictures and articles. Also, his presentation was shown on Mexican TV live.
Gabriel Obertan is the third Manchester United signing. He is a 20-year-old French player from Bordeaux. He signed a 4 year deal and he plays as attacking right midfielder or second striker. He is part of France’s Under 21 National Team.
Carlos Tévez has joined Manchester City for a 150,000-GBP-a-week (in the region of what Cristiano was earning at Manchester United) and a initial fee of 25 million GBP to secure his signature for the next five years. Tévez 2 year loan with ManUtd expired at the end of June, making him a free agent. Ferguson claims that he offered Tévez a deal since February and again at the end of last season but he rejected them. Tévez looks for first team football as he was a regular on the bench for the all-important matches, or so he says. Manchester City does not offer him Champions League football but he probably will play as front man week in and week out. The official news is now posted on Manchester City official website.
Ferguson announced that no further arrivals are planed for the rest of the summer transfer window. He suspects that Real Madrid and Manchester City big expenses have inflated the value of all players taking no consideration of the world financial crisis. Other clubs know that ManUtd have money for the sale of Cristiano, and might value any player much higher than normal.
Also, he gave the number 7 jersey to Michael Owen. He was Ballon d’Or 2001 and has 29 years old; he won’t have the jersey that much longer. Pay no attention to the numbers in the photo as their training kit is different to their official number.
Frazier Campbell, the ManUtd forward who was on loan at Tottenham Hotspur last season as leverage for Dimitar’s transfer, has signed for Sunderland. He has signed a 4 year deal and the initial fee could reach 6 million GBP. His new coach is Steve Bruce, a former ManUtd player who became Sunderland’s manager since last month.
Manucho Goncalves, the 25 year old Angolan striker who signed for Manchester United in the beginning of 2008, was sold to Valladolid in La Liga. He only played twice for the first team. His debut came in the Carling Cup vs Middlesbrough last September and then as a substitute vs Stoke in the Premier League a few months later. He was loaned to Hull City for the second part of last season.
Manchester United signed Mame Biram Diouf, a 21-year-old striker from Senegal. He plays for Molde F.K., a Norwegian club. He will remain there, on loan, until January. So he will join ManUtd as the turn of the year.
Richard Eckersley, the young defender who made his debut for the first team as substitute in the FA Cup quarter finals vs Tottenham last season has joined Burnley. He is 20 years old but had little opportunity for regular football in ManUtd. Burnley is a newcomer in the EPL this season and he might get more chances to play.
