Barely! Manchester United beat Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium. There was only one goal. Ferguson fielded a strange team: Van der Sar as goalkeeper; Neville, Evans, Vidic and O’Shea as defenders; Giggs, Scholes, Fletcher and Cristiano as midfielders; Rooney and Tévez as forwards. Yes, Dimitar was on the bench. There was an awful back line because Ferdinand hurt his back in the warm-up, Evra is suspender for half a dozen matches and Brown is injured. This time Evans was the worst defender; Neville was good not considering his little spat with a rival who hurt Cristiano.

An hour has passed and there were no goals on sight. So, Dimitar came of the bench at the 64th minute, in place of O’Shea. It was a gamble as the 4 offensive players were on the field: Cristiano, Rooney, Tévez and Dimitar. Cristiano was very quiet and some rival players were kicking him; the good thing is that a Stoke defender was expelled with his second yellow card of the match when he harshly kicked Cristiano on the 72nd minute.

The breakthrough finally came on the 83rd minute. Tévez scored assisted by Dimitar with his “lovely first touch”.

Now, what the news report have to say about Dimitar’s performance:

Daily Express: “substitute Dimitar Berbatov produced a superb first touch from Neville’s cross before volleying in a cross that Tevez was alert enough to finish off.”

The Times Online: “The replacement of John O'Shea by Berbatov, with Giggs moving to left back, was an attacking move, but urgency is not Berbatov's forte, either.”

Skysports: “Neville started the move and delivered the ball into the area where Dimitar Berbatov controlled it with ease.”

ManUtd.com: “Dimitar Berbatov - Showed quick feet and a sharp mind to win the race for Neville's pass and drill the ball across the box for Tevez to score the long-awaited winner. Also nearly scored himself, heading over from Ronaldo's cross not long after coming on… The vital breakthrough goal was created by Dimitar Berbatov, sent on as a substitute as Sir Alex Ferguson strived to avoid another costly stalemate.”

Manchester Evening News: “Berbatov (sub O’Shea 64) Great assist for winner 7”.

The Sun: ”Tevez smashed home only his second Premier League goal of the season after substitute Dimitar Berbatov’s clever first touch bought him the space to fire the ball into the danger area.”

Next match: Monday 29th vs Middlesbrough.
