Carling: Away vs Barnsley
Manchester United beat the Championship team Barnsley at Oakley with 2 goals and 10 men as Neville was expelled on the hour mark. This match was the fourth round of the Carling Cup. Dimitar and Vidic did not play and were not on the bench. This result takes them to the quarterfinals.
Ferguson thinks of the Carling Cup as the opportunity to test younger players. He normally fields a couple of senior players but most are youngsters. The starting XI was: Foster as goalkeeper; Neville, Evans, Brown and Fabio as defenders; Obertan, Anderson, Rafael and Welbeck as midfielders; Owen and Macheda as forwards. This game marked the first competitive match for Obertan, the new signing from last summer.
The action began on the 5th minute with a goal from Welbeck heading a corner taken by Anderson. In the second half, the Serbian Tosic substituted the goal scorer in the 52nd minute due to injury. Michael Owen scored the second goal in the 58th minute assisted again by Anderson. But a few minutes later, the defender Neville is shown a straight red for a foul on a rival player in the 62nd minute. To cover for the defender side, Owen is withdrawn in the 65th minute substituted by De Laet. Near the end, Tosic receives a yellow card for a foul on a rival player. A Barnsley fan invaded the field, took the ball from Foster and kicked it towards United’s net.

Tottenham, last year’s finalists, also won their match with two goals against Everton. Remember that ManUtd won last season’s Cup with a team full of youngsters.
Next match is for the EPL on Saturday, home against Blackburn.
