Carling: Home vs Wolverhampton
This Wednesday, Manchester United played the third round of the Carling Cup against Wolverhampton at Old Trafford. ManUtd won with one goal and ten men during one hour. Dimitar and Vidic did not play and were not on the bench either.
Wolverhampton is a team recently promoted to the Premier League. A win ensures passage to the next round (last 16) and a draw calls for extra time. Ferguson fielded a weak team, following the excerptions of the derby. The starting XI was: Kuszczak as goalkeeper; Fabio, Brown, Evans and Neville as defenders; Welbeck, Carrick, Gibson and Nani as midfielders; Owen and Macheda as forwards. A couple of new faces on the bench: King (forward), Eikrem (midfielder) and Amos (goalkeeper).
The first half remained goalless but the defender Fabio grabbed the headlines when he was harshly sent off in the 29th minute. He fouled a rival player on his way towards goal; besides the red card, a free kick was awarded as the foul was outside the box. As a result, the defender De Laet substituted the striker Macheda to ensure coverage at the back.
Finally, the goal came courtesy of the young striker Welbeck assisted by Owen in the 66th minute. A few minutes later, Owen is substituted by midfielder Valencia to prevent injuries for the derby hero. In the 81st minute, the goal scorer was substituted by the young forward King.
