Manchester United beat CSKA Moscow at the Luzhniki Stadium with one goal from a newcomer in CL: Valencia.
The stadium brings memories for most of the players. This is where they won the 2008 Champions League Cup in penalties against Chelsea. The press conference before the match showed a couple of things to notice: the artificial pitch, Vidic’s birthday on the day of the match and that he played for the City rivals (Spartak Moscow), and CSKA Moscow’s manager is former Tottenham’s and Dimitar’s manager Juande Ramos.
The starting XI was as always in Europe brings a populated midfield: Van der Sar as goalkeeper; Fabio, Vidic, Ferdinand and Neville as defenders; Nani, Anderson, Scholes, O’Shea and Valencia as midfielders; Dimitar as lone striker. Injuries and the upcoming EPL match against Liverpool on the weekend depleted the side. Rooney was out on injury and waiting in England for the birth of his first child.
Dimitar was the only player to receive a yellow card, it was the 54th and was booked for diving. Brown substituted Ferdinand on the 56th minute. Owen substituted Scholes on the 70th minute. And finally the goal came courtesy of Cristiano’s replacement: Valencia scored in the 86th minute. I think Dimitar might be credited with the assist as his header deflected the ball towards Valencia. Near the end of the match, Carrick substituted Fabio because of injury.

From ManUtd.com: “Dimitar Berbatov - It was a frustrating night for the Bulgarian, who never looked entirely comfortable operating as a lone striker. Flicked on Nani’s cross for the goal but was also booked for diving.”
From Goal.com: “Berbatov - 7 - Was let down by his team-mates' lack of desire to support him in his lone striking role and sloppiness in supplying him with the ball. Great header to set up Valencia.”
From M.E.N.: “Berbatov: CSKA boss Juande Ramos had the Bulgarian at Tottenham and described him as unstoppable. Sadly he didn’t get enough of the ball to prove the Spaniard right 6.”
From The Sun: “Ferguson always prefers to play one striker and a five-man midfield in Europe. If that one is Rooney then he poses a constant danger to the opposition as he buzzes here and there, linking the play and threatening goal. Berbatov does not. His header on to set up the goal was one of his few meaningful contributions. When Rooney feels he is being left out of the game in his lone role he will go looking for the ball to affect the match in other areas of the pitch. Berbatov rarely does. Here, he was the only United player in long sleeves and gloves on a chilly night in Moscow. And he spent most of the game huffing, puffing and gesturing his frustration as passes didn't get to him and moves fell down. To add insult to injury he was then booked in the 53rd minute for diving in a vain attempt to win a penalty when challenged by CSKA's Aleksei Berezutski.”
This result keeps ManUtd at the top of the group. The other match of the group ended with no goals.
