Manchester United lost the title for the European Champions in Rome. Barcelona won the Champions League final with two goals. Barcelona was a compact team with a good defense and opportunities upfront. ManUtd was not able to score. At least we were not stunned and heartbroken as Chelsea. Platini must be ecstatic. Stadio Olimpico saw United fall, again.
The starting XI was: Van der Sar as goalkeeper; Evra, Vidic, Ferdinand and O’Shea as defenders; Giggs, Carrick and Anderson as midfielders; Rooney, Cristiano and Park as forwards. Barcelona fielded Messi, Eto’o, Henry, Iniesta, Xavi and Piqué as relevant players.
Barcelona scored the first goal in the 10th minute courtesy of Eto’o. This came after a couple of efforts from ManUtd. At the end of the first half, ManUtd looked out of control.
At the start of the second half Tévez substituted Anderson. Barcelona had a couple of good efforts on goal. Dimitar substituted Park in the 66th minute, a surprising change as Park is known for his endurance and Dimitar for his laid back style. The fantastic four were on the field: Cristiano, Rooney, Tévez and Dimitar. However, the second goal for Barcelona came in the 70th minute courtesy of Messi. Good God, how sad! Cristiano had a good effort on goal after that but Barcelona’s goalkeeper had a good save. Scholes substituted Giggs on the 75th minute. Cristiano was shown a yellow card evidence of his feelings of the field. Scholes was also booked. Vidic also got a yellow card at the end.

Dimitar had a regular performance, his hunger for a Champions League medal was not there. It was his second final (the first came when he was at Bayern Leverkusen) and he was in the losing side, again. He might be jinxed just like Ballack from Chelsea. Cristiano also had a regular performance. I guess Messi is walking away with all the individual awards.

Barcelona 2-0 Man Utd
By Phil McNulty
Now the ratings from other sites:
From ManUtd.com: “Berbatov Missed headed chance on 86 mins, but for once the fab four didn’t gel in adversity. Such a shame it had to happen in Rome. Tevez Great chance straight after 2-0 to get one back, but shot was blocked and Ronaldo couldn’t convert rebound. Effervescent as ever but didn’t galvanise as he has so often this season. Ronaldo Just not his night, shots flew just wide in the first half and was perpetually crowded out in the second. Booked after bundling over Puyol twice in quick succession.”
From Manchester Evening News: “Berbatov: The Bulgarian has failed to produce on a consistant basis in his first season at Old Trafford - and given little time to make an impact on this match, it was another uninspiring display. A losing finalist with Bayer Leverkusen previously, he will begin to wonder if he is cursed. 4. Rooney: Struggled to get into the game from the start when playing on the left. Several loose passes were typical of an out of sorts performance to begin with. Switched to the right in the second half and saw much more of the ball, putting in some inviting crosses that United should have made more of. 6. Tevez: His introduction at half time had the desired effect of getting Rooney into the game. But Tevez provided little more attacking threat than Anderson before him. A disappointing end if it proves to be his final performance for United. 6. Ronaldo: Looked desperate to prove he is the best player on the planet and forced a save with a 30-yard free kick after less than two minutes. Twice came close after that before the match was 10 minutes old and could have got one back after United went 2-0 down, only to be denied again by Valdes with a brilliant stop. 7.”
From Goal.com: “Berbatov -5.5: Made no impact at all. Rooney -5.5: Just could not get into the game at all, which is a shame as he deserved to shine after such a brilliant season. Difficult to think of a single moment when Rooney threatened the Barcelona defence. Tevez 5.5: Replaced Anderson, but this damaged United's shape. Bad substitution by Ferguson. Ronaldo -7.0: Outstanding during the first 20 minutes, unleashing a host of efforts at goal. However, when Xavi and Iniesta took control of the midfield, he disappeared a little. Missed United's best chance just after Messi's second.”
From Setanta: “Dimitar Berbatov (5.5): Most notable contribution was to head well over as full time drew close. Wayne Rooney (6): Stranded, and his frustration was defined by an over-hit Carrick pass intended for him in the second half. Carlos Tevez (6.5): Added energy and fought hard, but over zealous at times. Gave away the free-kick from which Xavi hit the post. Cristiano Ronaldo (7): A glut of early chances, and he looked to have the wind in his sails immediately after kick-off. Faded as the game wore on, and started to lose his temper.”
From Times Online: “Dimitar Berbatov 5. Wayne Rooney 6 Contributed little from the left wing in the first half, but far more involved on the right after half-time, played a brilliant cross that just eluded Ronaldo and shot wide from distance. Carlos Tévez 5. Cristiano Ronaldo 6 Could not be faulted for effort as he produced five attempts on goal in the first 20 minutes, but unable to provide any true quality and became increasingly frustrated.”
From Belfast Telegraph: “DIMITAR BERBATOV: Typically laconic cameo with little or no end product. 5. WAYNE ROONEY: Looked unhappy to be out on a limb instead of his favoured central position and spent 90 minutes trying - and conspicuously failing - to get involved. 5. CARLOS TEVEZ (on for Anderson, 45 mins): Anticipation from United's fans was tangible when the Argentina striker was sent on for the second period but it was an uninspired shift. 5. CRISTIANO RONALDO: The mercurial Portuguese looked set to have one of his special nights when he went close in only the second minute, but despite his constant energy he was bested almost every time when it mattered. 6.”
Dimitar next match is with Bulgaria for the qualifiers of the World Cup, on Saturday June 6 in Sofia against the Republic of Ireland.
