Barely, again! Manchester United beat Middlesbrough by one goal at Old Trafford. But the best news is that Dimitar scored the only goal. He was part of the starting XI: Van der Sar as goalkeeper; O’Shea, Vidic, Evans and Rafael as defenders; Park, Fletcher, Carrick and Cristiano as midfielders; Rooney and Dimitar as forwards. Tévez was not even on the bench because he flew to Argentina on family matters.
The statistics point at 34 chances for United and only Dimitar goal spare them the blushes. After his goal at the 69th minute, the team missed 3 clear opportunities, with Park having the miss of the season in front of goal.
Cristiano’s actions were also the talk of the day. The Boro captain almost chocked Cristiano at the end of the first half. The TV showed the intention of the rival player and the histrionics of Cristiano. It was fun to watch as none of them were booked or expelled.
Dimitar played good, not spectacular but his goal put him in the headlines of every match report.

Next, what others report had to say on his performance:
From The Sun: “7: Tevez was in Argentina last night having been given time off due to family problems. The more gifted Berbatov would probably have returned anyway and he struck the winning goal. But it was only his second in 15 Premier League games.”
From The Independent: “Up stepped Dimitar Berbatov, the man who stands outside the sound and fury on occasions like this, waiting for his moment. Sir Alex Ferguson paid £30.75m so he would pick a route through teams like Middlesbrough, on nights when they have thrown so many men behind the ball that you can barely see grass amid the sea of blue shirts, and it happens to be in his nature that he will oblige in his own good time.”
From the Daily Express: “Berbatov is the big difference”.
From the Daily Star: “DIMITAR BERBATOV came to the rescue last night just as Manchester United looked like dropping vital points… He despatched a clincal volley that left keeper Ross Turnbull rooted to the spot.”
From ManUtd.com: “Dimitar Berbatov – At his effortless finest, constantly bringing players into play. His goal celebration saw him at his most animated - only because brilliance comes easy.”
From the Times Online: “He is the type of player who would rather miss the bus than be seen breaking into a sprint, but, as a sense of urgency grew around Old Trafford last night, it was the languid figure of Dimitar Berbatov who ensured that Manchester United did not fall further behind schedule in their hunt for a third successive Premier League title… Berbatov would keep his head while all those around him were losing theirs. Faced with a bouncing ball in a crowded penalty area, he took an extra fraction of a second to adjust his body and then, just as it seemed that he may have taken too long, he prodded it past Ross Turnbull… Berbatov is not every United supporter’s cup of tea and even Sir Alex Ferguson, his greatest advocate, must be frustrated by him at times, but, whatever he may lack in terms of dynamism or industry, there is no more composed finisher in the Old Trafford dressing-room. In many ways he is the antithesis to Carlos Tévez… it is little wonder that the United manager has usually found himself turning to Berbatov rather than Tévez.”
From Manchester Evening News: “Berbatov: Debatable whether he would have started had Tevez not returned to Argentina following his winning goal against Stoke on Boxing Day, but scored an absolutely vital goal 8”
From the Telegraph: “Dimitar Berbatov, the epitome of unhurried elegance, often resembles an Edwardian gentleman strolling to dinner at the Ritz, but he certainly knows how to make his mark in style. Manchester United’s No 9 ambled into the congested Middlesbrough area after 68 minutes, coolly keeping his head while all around others were losing theirs. His finish was incredibly composed, the one moment of real class in a frenetic game… it required the deftness of their new Bulgarian to give them three vital points… Berbatov needed to deliver. So languid, so what? When it counted, the Bulgarian found the mark.”
Sir Alex Ferguson as reported in Sky Sports: “He is a marvelous player and I thought he was absolutely superb for us. He took his goal well”
