Manchester United beat Bolton 2:1 at Old Trafford. This result puts the club in pole position taking advantage of Chelsea’s and Liverpool’s losses. An own goal and a great effort from Valencia gave them the lead. Dimitar played all 90 minutes; Vidic was not even on the bench.
In the Friday morning press conference, Ferguson was not sure who might play that match as Dimitar had not returned from Bulgaria at that time. Remember, his daughter was born 24 hours earlier; Rooney had a calf injury sustained in international duty and Owen was injured a couple of weeks early. But the doubts were dissipated on Saturday. Dimitar showed his commitment to the club when he played the full match that afternoon.
The starting XI was: Van der Sar as goalkeeper; Neville, Ferdinand, Evans and Evans as defenders; Valencia, Carrick, Anderson, Giggs as midfielders; Owen and Dimitar as forwards. It was Van der Sar first official match since his broken finger injury at the beginning of the season, dropping the top blunderer Foster as Kuszczak was on the bench. Vidic did not make it to the bench as he might be injured or resting for the midweek match on the Champions League.
The match started with the own goal in favor of ManUtd in the 4th minute. Michael Owen forced Bolton’s error as he is credited with the assist. In the 33rd minute, Valencia scored the second goal, assisted by Neville. However, Bolton responded in the second half with a header on the 75th minute. Earlier, the had a disallowed goal on grounds of handball. There was nervousness in every air ball. O’Shea and Welbeck substituted Evra and Owen in the 83rd minute. Anderson substituted Scholes in the 86th minute.
