Manchester United comfortably beat Manchester City at Old Trafford with two goals in the first half. The team reached again top spot, 3 points clear and a game in hand. The finish line is near; they only need 4 more points from the 3 last matches.

Ferguson fielded a strong team, aware of the importance of every derby game with their new wealthy neighbors and the fact that Liverpool won their match the day before, reaching the top at level points with better goal difference. The starting XI was: Van der Sar as goalkeeper; Rafael, Vidic, Evans and Evra as defenders; Cristiano, Fletcher, Giggs and Park as midfielders; Tévez and Dimitar as forwards.

The first goal came from Cristiano’s powerful free kick in the 17th minute. The goalkeeper was surprised and he got to touch the ball but it went in. Dimitar was involved as he was fouled and the referee awarded that free kick. It is also worth mentioning that Dimitar was sprinting and the City defender had to foul him; of course not very far and fast, but impressive as he tries to get rid of his “lazy” label.

Celebrating with Cristiano

Dimitar was also seen defending at times, getting the ball from a rival. There was also an incident with a City defender, complaining that Dimitar hurt him in an off the ball incident, battling to run for the ball.

Tévez came close to scoring after the first goal, but his shot hit the woodwork. He actually scored in the 45th minute with a strong shot by the middle. Dimitar is awarded with the assist as he controlled the incoming pass superbly and found Tévez. It is very sad to read that he is definitely going out at the end of the season as he feels unwanted and hates not starting every game. His owner claims he has offers from around Europe but he is keen of remaining in an English club.

In the second half, Robinho received a good ball in front of goal but luckily wasted his chance. He was City’s record breaking transfer, the same day Dimitar joined ManUtd.

Cristiano was substituted by Scholes and Park was substituted by Rooney; both on the 58th minute. Cristiano was angry at his substitution as he hit a track suit offered to him. It might be a tactical substitution but also to rest him after the exhaustion of the CL match last Tuesday. Please Cristiano, do not get angry, you know Ferguson always looks after you.

Evans was substituted by O’Shea in the 69th minute. Tévez had an effort on goal with a pass from Dimitar. Bulgaria’s teammate Martin Petrov entered the field on the 72nd minute for City.

Dimitar should try his luck from far. He should shoot when seen clear, instead of passing to others; that is what Cristiano would do. Later Dimitar was found alone on City’s half. He controlled the ball, with a few stumbles, ran trying to get the defenders off and managed to get a corner kick on his alone own; he did that covering the whole City half. However, he was more anonymous in the last 45 minutes.

Scholes stoke the post with his kick, Tévez was near to poke it but almost hurt himself. Almost at the end of the match, Dimitar showed a peace of skill to deceive the defender, almost like the famous one against West Ham.

Next, what other reports have to say about the players’ performance:

From ManUtd.com: “Dimitar Berbatov: Everything played towards the Bulgarian stuck like glue; he then invariably brought his team-mates into the game with clever passes. Pulled out a few party pieces too. Carlos Tevez: Scored a superb goal and almost netted an even better one when he cut inside and rattle the frame of the goal. If Tevez felt he had a point to prove, he certainly did. Superb. Wayne Rooney: Again proved his versatility by slotting in on the right side of midfield. Showed plenty of passion and even tried a cheeky 50-yard chip. Cristiano Ronaldo; A superb first goal but Ronny was otherwise uncharacteristically quiet. Then again, his average is another man’s outstanding...”

From Manchester Evening News: “Berbatov: The Bulgarian’s control was class and gave the Reds a sense of derby day calm 7. Tevez: Brilliant goal, telling goal gesture and an all round crowd pleaser again 8. Rooney: Buzzed about 6Rooney (sub Park 59) Buzzed about 6. Ronaldo: Glorious free-kick strike but he didn’t have same success rate with his flicks 6. City’s Petrov: brought much needed width and tested keeper 6.”

From Goal.com: “Berbatov: 7.5 - Did superbly to take the ball down and set up Tevez for the second and combined well with the Argentine all afternoon in a classy showing. Tevez: 8.5 – Hit the bar twice, once with a super strike and late on with a header, before scoring the second with a great finish. Ronaldo: 7.5 - His free-kick needed a deflection to beat Given but he looked a threat whenever he had the ball before he was given a rest on hour mark. City’s Petrov: 6.5 - Decent shot late on.”
