It was a goal fest but we were in the wrong end. Liverpool trashed Manchester United at Old Trafford. The “Reds” scored 4 goals against a penalty from the “Red Devils”. Liverpool is in a row, completely euphoric after the trashing of Real Madrid, they completed their incredible week by trashing ManUtd. With this result, ManUtd remains in pole position with only 4 points clear and one game in hand. This loss puts Liverpool and Chelsea with an opportunity to reach the Premier League expecting further slips from ManUtd. Chelsea won their match vs ManCity.
I cannot say I am scared. I was waiting for this match very calm, having the team secure the quarterfinals of the Champions League. I guess the players felt the same, complacency, tiredness and little concentration.
The starting XI was a good team: Van der Sar as goalkeeper; O´Shea, Vidic, Ferdinand and Evra as defenders; Park, Anderson, Carrick and Cristiano as midfielders; Rooney and Tévez as forwards.
The first goal was a penalty awarded to Manchester United as the Liverpool goalkeeper brought Park down. Cristiano had a powerful shot which could not be stopped. Minutes later, a long pass for Torres brought their goal. Vidic was at fault, he was “sleeping” when the pass came. The great skills of Torres showed in front of goal.
Later another penalty awarded, this time for Liverpool. Evra fouled a player from Liverpool and Gerrard had a powerful which Van der Sar almost caught.
Carrick was again in a bad day, his passes were inaccurate and Anderson was below par, as almost all season. Something is wrong with Carrick, very unlike him; I regard him as a very capable and creating midfielder. The team was loosing by one goal and Ferguson had the decision to introduce an attacking force. But it was a little late, in the 70th minute; it was still 1 goal from the home side and 2 goals for the visitors. Ferguson introduced Dimitar, Giggs and Scholes to replace Park, Carrick and Anderson.
The fantastic four were in the field: Cristiano, Rooney, Tévez and Dimitar. If you are loosing, it does not matter if you loose by one or three goals. Minutes later, Vidic brought Gerrard down, just outside the goal area. I think it was Vidic’s worst day of his life. The referee awarded a straight red for him, leaving a 10 men United team, with most players of attacking nature. The free kick awarded to Liverpool produced their third goal. The straight red normally produces a suspension for the next match.

It was a nightmare, the team was pressing for another goal but Van der Sar was caught far from his goal and a long shot became the fourth goal at the end of the match.
The good thing of this trashing is that it was a humbling lesson for the Champions, to guard against complacency. Also, I prefer this result now than against Inter or for a fixture which could put the trophies in real jeopardy.
It was a bad experience, but just 3 points were lost. Hopefully the experience will see United recover the hunger and urgency to get results.
The poor performance of Carrick and Anderson showed faults in Vidic and poor definition up front with Tévez. The Rooney and Tévez partnership is not good anymore, especially now that Cristiano is not as proficient. In those lines, Tévez missed a couple of good chances when we were just one goal down. I just think he is not worth 32 million based in today’s and CC final performances. He is not an out and about striker and that is why he cannot get the all important goals in this all important matches.
Now what other reports have to say about the front line performance:
From ManUtd.com: “Wayne Rooney: One of those days for the striker, who battled hard and enjoyed lots of the ball, but little that he tried seemed to come off. Carlos Tevez: Given his chance after scoring United’s opener at Anfield in September, the Argentinian also worked his socks off and twice came close to equalising early in the second half, scuffing one decent chance wide. Dimitar Berbatov (replaced Ji-sung Park, 74 mins): Hardly given a sniff by the visitors’ buoyant defence.”
From Manchester Evening News: “Tevez: If more of his team mates had put in the normal shift like he did then Reds may have got something out of it 7. Rooney: In brief spells he looked like he could get United going and spark something but it didn’t happen often enough 6. Berbatov (sub Park 73) Never in it 4.”
From Goal.com: “Rooney 7.5 - United's best player by a country mile. He was always chasing lost causes and turning lemons into lemonade, hacking countless wayward crosses back into the danger area. Wherever he was asked to play, and it really did vary, he looked dangerous. He should be more than a utility man, though. Tevez 7 - Another who worked hard, he played the telling pass which led to United's opener. The Argentine was involved in numerous near things, but the ball wouldn't really fall for him. Berbatov came on in a triple change, but 'Pool scored the fourth almost immediately. It was too little, too late.”
The team has a whole week to think about this result and prevent further slips. The next match is Saturday vs Fulham.
