The Bulgarian National Football Team has jeopardized their qualification to the 2010 World Cup. The match between Bulgaria and Ireland in Sofia called for a must win for the home side if they were looking to get a chance. However, the only managed to get a draw with one goal for each side.
The goals came in the first half although Bulgaria seemed to dominate. The Republic of Ireland scored first courtesy of Richard Dunne in the 24th minute following a free-kick. Dimitar Telkiyski scored five minutes later thanks to an Irish defensive error. Dimitar Berbatov had a chance with a header that came just over the bar. Keane (Dimitar’s former teammate at Tottenham) and O’Shea (current defender and teammate at Manchester United) were part of Ireland’s team.

With this result, the qualification for Bulgaria is out of their hands. They have little hope, counting on a series of blunders for the top two teams and winning their own matches. The result left Bulgaria in third place in the section with 6 points from six matches. Italy top the standings with 14 points, followed by Ireland, who have played one game more, on 13. The top three teams are still undefeated. This would be their third consecutive failure to reach the finals of a major tournament.
The next qualifying match is on September 5 against Montenegro in Sofia. But a friendly will be played in August against Latvia.
